Hello everyone. This time, as it is the 6th installment of the series that housewives tried, I will write an article about "mini tomatoes", which is a hot topic at home.
The opportunity to grow cherry tomatoes
The reason why I cultivated cherry tomatoes this time was that there was a garbage dump in the backyard of my house, but before I knew it, the cherry tomatoes that had sprouted from the seeds and grew little by little. I found a seedling. (Maybe from the leftovers of cherry tomatoes in children's lunch boxes ...) I discovered it in late October or early November. I had never grown cherry tomatoes myself, but I remembered that my eldest son had grown vegetables in class at school, and one of them was growing cherry tomatoes in flowerpots. Considering the timing, I thought that it would be useless in the cold as it is, "I have grown up so far by myself, so let's watch over until the end (harvesting the fruit)!" I decided to grow the seedlings indoors.
How to grow cherry tomatoes
Seedlings of cherry tomatoes are usually sold at home improvement stores around spring, so it is common to buy the seedlings and plant them in planters or fields. For details on how to grow mini tomatoes, please see the site that contains the tomato cultivation methods for beginners that I referred to.
About the cultivation of cherry tomatoes I performed
① First, put the soil in a cardboard box and plant the seedlings.
Two solid seedlings were growing, so I planted them all in one box for the time being.
② Since the seedlings were growing quite a bit, set up a support and fix the seedlings with twine.
When it was planted in the ground, it had a solid stem thickness, but after a while it became slightly thinner, so it may be that there was not enough fertilizer. ..
③ I bought organic fertilizer at a home improvement store and placed it at appropriate intervals to fertilize it.
This organic fertilizer is harmless made from food, but it smells like a fishy soup stock, so pet owners may need to be careful.
My dog 🐶 is a very gluttonous person, so he seemed to be a little mischievous when I wasn't there because of the smell, so I gave him a sermon (laughs).
④ As the flowers have begun to grow, try artificial pollination.
There seem to be various methods for artificial pollination, but in my case, I was growing indoors and honeybees could not enter freely (it was difficult in terms of time), so it was a very simple "with my fingers".
I used the method of "playing the flowers lightly".→ It seems that tomatoes are pollinated by the pollen of the stamens sticking to the pistils by flipping the finger.
I was careful not to lack the side buds as soon as possible.
(The missing side buds can be rooted again by cutting them in the soil and can be grown as new seedlings.)
⑤ The cardboard box has become tattered, and the flowers are attached and the stems have grown to a large extent, so replant them in a flowerpot.
It was impossible to replant indoors, so I went outside once, but the outside temperature was quite low (maybe it will die ...?), So I was very worried about the work. did.
In addition, I was shocked to see that about three growing fruits of the cherry tomatoes that had been attached to me when I moved were broken off. ..
There was a kettle, but first lay a pot bottom stone in a flower pot, put cardboard soil on it as it is and replant the seedlings, and the other pot is commercially available at home centers for vegetable cultivation etc.
I put it in and replanted it.
Re-fix the seedlings by erecting new long stanchions.
⑥ Topdressing was applied after replanting.
At the time of replanting, it was mixed with the soil and replanted. → Later, when I checked how to grow it, I heard that I had to be careful not to over-fertilize it until it bears fruit. ..
⑦ Place it near the entrance where it is easily exposed to sunlight and watch the subsequent growth.
After a long time, blue fruits begin to grow, then gradually grow and become red fruits.
⑧ I found a cracked fruit in the red grown fruit, so I hurriedly harvest it.
If we harvested it a little earlier, it might not have cracked. ..
⑨ Debuted as a food (side dish) in charge of coloring lunch boxes! !!
It's not that big, but it has a red presence even if it's small, and the plain bento looks gorgeous at once! !!
(Recently, vegetables are expensive, and even if the cherry tomatoes are stable, the price is not so cheap, so it was very economically helpful!)
Good and bad things about growing stray cherry tomatoes
<Good thing>
For the first time, I was able to experience growing cherry tomatoes by myself. The pollination went well, the fruit was properly produced, and it was grown until it ripened red. The taste of the cherry tomatoes was not sour, and it was fruity and very delicious. It played the role of a side dish as a person in charge of coloring the lunch box. Above all, I was able to enjoy the sense of accomplishment that I had put on my hands.
<What was wrong>
The stems and leaves of cherry tomatoes have a surprisingly strong odor. When you touch it, your hands smell. Using organic fertilizer is safe for food, but the smell of fertilizer makes my pet mischievous (in my case, it was only the first time). It may be better to replant the plants a little earlier (when the seedlings are still small) so that the stems and leaves may break or the fruits may not be harvested. By using organic fertilizer, a large number of insects (drosophila) have been generated. → It was very unpleasant to be on the white wall on the Bissiri line! So, I used a vacuum cleaner to get rid of it each time. You may have over-fertilized. → It is necessary to grow while carefully checking how to grow.
Summary
This time, I wrote an article about the story from indoor cultivation to harvesting of "stray cherry tomatoes", which is currently a hot topic at home. It was the first mini tomato I grew by myself in my life, so I'm really happy to be able to grow it safely with excitement and excitement every day, such as whether it really bears fruit or turns red. Almost half of the fruits were lost in the first harvest, but the rest are still growing, so I would like to grow them to the end. I never thought that I would grow cherry tomatoes out of season like this, but I can do it even in an elementary school experience gardening class, so if I study how to grow it properly, I may be able to harvest more. Anyway, I am grateful to "Stray Mini Tomatoes" for giving me a valuable experience.
Thank you for reading to the end. See you in the next article.
